Casual Loading Explained: Are You Getting Paid Correctly?
Casual Loading Explained
Casual employees in Australia receive an additional 25% on top of their base hourly rate. This is called “casual loading” and compensates for the lack of guaranteed hours and paid leave.
What is Casual Loading?
Casual loading is a percentage increase (typically 25%) added to the minimum award rate for casual employees.
Example Calculation
If the award rate for your role is $24 per hour:
- Base rate: $24.00
- 25% loading: $6.00
- Total hourly rate: $30.00
Common Mistakes
Many casual workers are underpaid because:
- Employers don’t apply the loading
- Loading not calculated on penalty rates
- Incorrect base rate used
Always check your payslip to ensure casual loading is being paid.
